You will need: Modello Wall Mural Stencil, Squeegee and Weeding Tool (both included with your order - yeah!), Painter’s Tape, Measuring Tape, Level, Scissors or Craft Knife, Large Sponge and Water. The Modello® stencil used here is the To The Point Triangles Mural Stencil from our DIY Mural Stencils Collection. Watch this helpful video on how to apply and paint Modello® vinyl stencils…
All Modello® stencils consist of three layers:
Important Steps BEFORE You Install Your Modello® Wall Mural Stencil
Lay your Modello® down on a hard surface, such as a large tabletop.
Use the Squeegee to burnish BOTH sides of the Modello® stencil really well. This will ensure that Transfer Tape is stuck securely to the vinyl stencil so that the Backing Paper comes off cleanly and easily.
To make the installation even easier you can “pre-release” the Backing Paper after burnishing. Here’s how….
With the Backing Paper side up, carefully peel the Backing Paper back from the Modello® stencil at a 180-degree angle. Do this slowly so you can see that the vinyl stencil is staying stuck to the Transfer Tape.
Peel the stencil back halfway and then smooth it back down lightly. Then peel back the other half and smooth it back down.
Place and Level
Measure for placement of your Modello® stencil. You should place this first “tile” of an allover stencil pattern at the center of the ceiling line.
Put the Modello® stencil in place, securing it with a couple of pieces of painter's tape.
Double check your measurements and use a bubble level to make sure that the pattern is level.
Once it’s in place, run a large piece of Painter’s Tape across the middle of the pattern. Extend the tape out on each side enough to make sure that it will stay secure during the stencil installation process.
Modello® DIY Mural Stencil Installation
Remove the small pieces of tape and allow the top half of the pattern to fall down.
Peel up the Backing Paper carefully from the stencil. Use scissors or a craft knife to cut the Backing Paper away.
Smooth the exposed Modello® stencil from the tape line up onto your surface using the flat of your hand and a sweeping motion as slowly you roll the stencil onto the surface.
Use the squeegee to burnish and secure the stencil in place.
Remove the center tape line and now pull the stencil up from the bottom.
Peel the Backing Paper away completely. Note: This can be done in smaller, more manageable sections if you are working alone.
Smooth the stencil down on to the wall with the same sweeping hand technique. Burnish the whole stencil onto the surface again with the squeegee.
Repeat with the other “tiles” to install the entire Modello® allover stencil on your feature wall.
Remove the Transfer Tape
For large Modello® stencils you will find it easier to remove the Transfer Tape if you moisten it. Wetting the paper Transfer Tape slightly will help the adhesive release easier.
Wet the sponge and wring it out well. You don’t want dripping water, just a dampened sponge.
Run the sponge over the surface of the Transfer Tape, beginning at the top. You will see the tape begin to wrinkle and pull away from the vinyl stencil slightly.
While it's still damp, begin to peel the Transfer Tape from the top down. For large Modello® stencils we recommend just working on one section at a time.
PRO TIP: We find it’s easiest to always pull the tape towards yourself and use the flat parts of your hands to push the vinyl stencil to the wall as you pull the Transfer Tape away.
Pull the Transfer Tape off slowly and watch to be sure that there are no smaller vinyl elements coming with it. If there are simply push or burnish them back in place as you continue to pull the tape.
Fold or cut the excess Transfer Tape away as you go and always pull the tape off in one main direction.
When the Transfer Tape removal is complete, burnish the vinyl stencil on the wall one last time.
Painting the Wall Mural Stencil Pattern
Now you are ready to decorate!
Load a foam paint roller with a black paint color. Remember to offload excess paint onto a paper towel so you end up stenciling with minimal paint. Stencil the entire wall design.
Remove the vinyl stencil design from the wall and DONE! You now have a stenciled modern mural done the fast and easy way!

Now you are ready to decorate!
Load a 3” stencil brush with a pink paint color. Remember to offload excess paint onto a paper towel so you end up stenciling with minimal paint. Stencil the wall design with circular motions about 10 inches out from the center.
Load and offload a 1.5” stencil brush with the lightest pink color. Stencil the center, overlap with the first color, and blend.
With a third pink color, paint about 5 inches around the first pink paint color. Overlap to blend the colors. Repeat with a slightly darker color. Use a 5th color to finish painting the mandala wall design.
Remove the vinyl stencil design from the wall and DONE! You now have a stenciled mandala mural done the fast and easy way!

]]>Supplies:
All Modello® stencils consist of three layers:
This custom painted carpet was done over a new unfinished maple floor. If you are working over an already finished floor, we recommend that you have it professionally sanded to remove the existing topcoat so that you can paint directly onto the wood surface.
Prep your surface by sanding the floor. Wipe the floor clean of debris. Measure the room to find the center.
Use a chalk line to mark where the painted carpet area will be. Check the corners with a squared rule and mask outside the lines using painter’s tape. Check the dimensions with measuring tape.
Mix 1 part Duck Egg Blue Chalk Paint with 1 part Louis Blue Chalk Paint. Add an equal part of water to create a wash. Using a chip brush, apply wash to entire carpet area. Use cheesecloth to blot excess paint before it dries. Add more water as needed to keep the paint really thin. Apply a second coat and adjust the color as desired.
Because of the size of this pattern, the Modello® stencil comes in 4 sections. Burnish each section with a squeegee front and back. Carefully remove the backing paper of each section to make sure each element of the design detaches easily. Lay the sections in place and attach them together with painter’s tape. Center the taped stencil in the painted square. Note: We painted the square 1 inch large than the Modello® stencil.
Place a large piece of tape across the middle of each section to anchor it. Fold the Modello® stencil back and detach from the backing paper, stopping just before the painter’s tape. Cut the backing paper off and roll the Modello® stencil onto the floor using your hand to smooth it. Remove tape and repeat on the other side. The process is easier if you do small sections at a time.
Use a squeegee to remove any air bubbles and make sure the vinyl stencil is attached to the floor. Wet the top layer of transfer tape with a damp sponge to release the adhesive backing and make it easier to peel. Move slowly to make sure the stencil is releasing properly. Use your fingers or the squeegee to reapply any parts that want to life from the floor.
Each section comes with a number marking the placement order. Use painter’s tape to cover them so you don’t paint them. Trim about 1” of the backing paper off tile #2 and match the pattern to tile #1. Remove the backing paper and place the Modello® stencil pattern. Repeat the application process with the other Modello® stencil sections. Move elements into place or use small pieces of tape to fill in the pattern as needed.
Mask off the edge of the rug with painter’s tape. Use a nylon roller to paint the entire stencil with Coco Chalk Paint. Paint elements with Old Ochre Chalk Paint and 1” stencil brush. Mask off other areas with painter’s tape.
Use a 1” or smaller stencil brush to stencil over chose elements with Old Ochre Chalk Paint. Stipple Old White Chalk Paint onto the Old Ochre painted elements to create texture. Fix any elements accidentally painted over with a small painting brush.
After the paint has dried, use a picking tool to remove the Modello® stencil.
Use an electric sander to lightly distress the paint and create an aged fabric look. Remove dust with a damp cloth.
Load a nylon roller with Old Ochre Chalk Paint. Roll it over a needle point plastic canvas. Apply the canvas paint side down on the painted rug and roll to apply pressure. Flip the canvas and repeat. Apply more paint as needed. Repeat the process allover and allow to dry.
Sand areas that were overpainted and wipe away dust. Let dry.
Apply 2 coats of Annie Sloan Floor Lacquer with a foam roller. Let each coat dry.

]]>With the help of these tips and tricks, you can now seamlessly install a Modello® vinyl stencil onto your wall to create a beautiful custom wall finish!
]]>Metallic foil is thin sheets of colored mica fused to clear cellophane. It comes in a multitude of gorgeous colors and is transferred to a surface by burnishing or scrubbing it over tacky gilding size. This tutorial features three jewel-tone colors, but you can substitute any combination of colors to create your own custom metallic magic!
You will need:
Follow the Basic Modello® vinyl stencil installation instructions to apply the pattern to your surface.
Applying Royal Stencil Size
Always burnish your Modello® stencil on your surface just before beginning to apply a decorative finish. Tape off any baseboards, adjacent walls, and ceiling line to protect them from the finish application.
Load a foam roller with Black Royal Stencil Size and offload any excess on the tray. The black pigmented size will give you both color and size in one coat. A black color looks amazing under the dark or jewel-toned metallic foil colors that we will be using. When working with metallic foils over a large area, you will need to apply at least two coats of size to give yourself a good amount of working time.
Apply the size to the wall through the stencil design in a thin, even layer and allow to dry for about 15 minutes.
Apply a second coat of Clear Royal Stencil Size and allow to dry for another 15 minutes. The clear size will give you more working time as it doesn’t contain pigment.
Applying Metallic Foil to a Wall
We are using metallic foils in the colors Peacock Blue, Peridot, and Sapphire Blue. Cut multiple pieces of each color foil of about 18” long.
Crumple the Peridot metallic foil so that the non-metallic side is facing the wall. Begin dabbing it very lightly on the wall as it may release color very quickly. Keep shifting the foil and the direction of your hand while dabbing to create an uneven, random metallic color application.
Open up the foil and crumple it again to keep exposing different parts of the foil. Once you have removed most of the metallic color from the foil, open it up flat and use a rag or scrub brush to apply pressure to the flat foil on the wall. Keep applying the foil randomly through the stencil design. Make sure not to transfer the foil all the way to the edge to avoid harsh lines on the wall finish.
Repeat the foiling process with Sapphire Blue and then Peacock Blue in the remaining open areas of the stencil design.
When the entire stencil design is metallic with all three colors, it’s time to remove the Modello® stencil to reveal your wall finish. Use a pick tool to remove the small elements of the vinyl stencil. Make sure not to dig the sharp pick tool into your surface.
Protect and Seal Your Stencil Design
A translucent toning layer will make your metallic colors richer and bring the whole wall finish together. We like to use Stain & Seal from Faux Effects®, a water-based gel stain with rich, sharp colors that penetrate the surface like dye. It will both tone AND seal your surface at the same time.
Mix a 1:1 ratio of Stain & Seal in American Walnut with SoSlow Super Extender. The extender will make the stain more translucent and allow you more working time.
Apply this aging glaze mix to the wall with a chip brush in small random areas. Smooth, blend, and rouge it into the surface immediately with a cheesecloth. Continue this step until your whole metallic finish wall is covered.
And here’s our final finish!
]]>You will need:
Preparing Your Furniture
Sand your furniture piece. We used a palm sander to completely remove the previous finish and expose the raw wood.
Mix equal parts of Stain & Seal and SoSlow Super Extender. The extender will to increase translucency and your working time. Apply the mix using a chip brush and follow the grain of the wood. Remove and smooth any excess with cheesecloth as you continue the application.
Applying a Modello® Stencil to Your Furniture
Follow the Basic Modello® vinyl stencil installation instructions to apply the pattern to your surface.
Applying the Wood Stain
Mix 3 parts Van Dyke Stain & Seal and 1 part SoSlow Super Extender. Use a chip brush to apply the mix over the entire table top and follow the grain of the wood. Remove and smooth any excess with cheesecloth as you continue the application. Allow to dry for 15 minutes.
Apply a second coat of this mix, but this time use more SoSlow Super Extender so it creates a more translucent stain. Allow to dry.
Protect and Seal Your Stencil Design
You can remove the Modello® vinyl stencil immediately to reveal your wood furniture finish.
Use the weeding tool that comes with your order to pick out smaller design elements. Take care not to dig into your surface with the weeding tool. Just use it to lift the edge of the Modello® stencil pieces.
Apply the Rich Brown Stain & Seal to the entire table top and follow the grain of the wood. Remove and smooth any excess with cheesecloth as you continue the application. Allow to dry.
Seal your stenciled furniture with either wax or water-based polyurethane.
Enjoy your faux inlaid wood statement piece!

Modello® Design Stencils make creating gilded, metal leaf designs so fast and easy! This project was completed in about an hours and a half. Really!! You can use this same gilding technique with any vinyl stencil from our large Modello® Custom Stencil Collection. What are you waiting for? Get glowing.....
You will need:
Follow the Basic Modello® vinyl stencil installation instructions to apply the pattern to your surface.
Applying the Royal Stencil Size
Run wide pieces of painter’s tape around the edges of the Modello® stencil to protect your background surface.
Burnish your Modello® stencil again just before beginning to ensure a tight seal.
Place Red Royal Stencil Size in a tray and load a small foam roller. Roll off excess size in the tray or on a piece of heavy paper.
Roll a thin, even coat of Red Royal Stencil Size overall. Allow the size to dry for approximately 15 minutes.
Roll on a second thin, even coat of Red Royal Stencil Size. This will ensure even coverage and give you a good, long open time. Allow the second coat of size to dry and come “to tack”. Wait a minimum of 20 minutes and up to 24 hours.
Gilding the Pattern with Metal Leaf
Apply the loose sheest of Gold Schaibin Leaf to the stencil design areas. Leave some open areas with the red gilding size showing through. When you smooth the leaf those areas will get filled in and this will give you more of a distressed, textural look.
After you complete the gold leaf application, burnish it well with a piece of lambs wool or soft cotton cloth.
Use a very firm pressure as you burnish to remove the excess leaf and fill in any open areas with loose leaf bits. Burnish overall again to make sure the leaf is pushed well into the edges of the open pattern.
Protect and Seal Your Stencil Design
You can wait until the following day, or if you choose, you can seal it immediately with wax and cheesecloth. Wear gloves to protect your hands.
Using a hard pressure will cause the freshly gilded surface to distress a little more. Be careful not to press too hard or you could damage sensitive areas, especially if you are waxing right away.
You can remove the Modello® stencil immediately after the wax dries up a bit.
Use the weeding tool that comes with your order to pick out smaller design elements. Take care not to dig into your surface with weeding tool. Just use it to lift the edge of the Modello® stencil pieces.
Enjoy your masterpiece!
